Runaway with me to see the world!

click to play: Jay Chou’s “Istanbul”

View from hotel room: Gloomy

The Blue Mosque

The Grand Bazaar a.k.a. The Grand Tourist Trap

Apple tea & spaghetti with fish in miso sauce

Concourse area of Galleria Atakoy

yaprak sarma: stuffed vine leaves

Yaprak Sarma –

Turkish dessert with walnut, dried figs, apricots, raisins, pomegranate, pistachios, desicated coconut and almond flakes.

Bits of Europe – Milan

Bits of Europe – Milan

Well, what does “excessive” mean?

It’s an adjective used to describe something that is created, made or done in a way that exceeds what is usual or normal.

I know what you’re thinking.

No. This isn’t an English language class. I’m probably the last person on earth you would want to be  conducting one.

But I am here to show you what excessive is and how excessive things can be. I know this word may have certain negative connotations to it, but I mean it in an absolutely positive, gaping-in-awe way.

May I now, present you, the forth largest church in the world, the one which had taken a whopping 500 years to complete…

The Gothic cathedral of Milan, Duomo di Milano.

Could it be the fact that this is the first ever European country that I’d ever visited or that the intricacy of this building is just simply stunning and magnificent?

I’m in awe.

I was so captivated by how every single spire on top of the building, every single carving outside and within the church is different and unique; where no two spires are of the same design and carvings. It’s as though the cathedral itself has a story to tell, and it probably does.

My traveling buddy and I spent two days exploring the cathedral. On the first day, we joined a guided tour and explored the insides of the cathedral. We were told by our guide that the small red light bulb in the dome above the apse is where one of the nails from the Crucifixion of the Christ was kept. We took time to explore the insides of the cathedral and even went into the crypt. Well, that kind of crept us out. So, we decided to leave the cathedral, head out into the open and be showered by the warm rays of sunshine.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Right next to the Duomo is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

It’s a shopping arcade that houses mostly boutiques and some cafés and more notably, one of the oldest Prada boutique in Milan which was opened back in 1983.

I couldn’t help but to notice how ornamental their drain covers are.

Until a funny sight at the corner of the galleria caught my attention. I saw people spinning round and round on their heels on the bull’s groin.

I was later told that it was for good luck. If you were to do three anti-clockwise spins on your heel on the bull’s groin, while making a wish, it will come true.

“Well, a woman did that long, long time ago, wishing for a child and she got pregnant after that. So, people started believing in the bull’s groin and started to spin round and round on its groin,” said our tour guide. Uh-huh.

Time for a little snack at the café with a view of the Duomo’s façade.

While waiting for our food, we saw a pink limo!

Apparently, the people in the limo were here for a pre-wedding photo shoot. My buddy and I however decided that we wouldn’t want to have a Gothic cathedral as a backdrop for our pre-wedding photos. I guess we were still having the creeps from the visit to the crypt earlier. Ha.

Food’s here! This has got to be the best pizza for me as it had all my favourite ingredients! Mushroom, olives, artichokes and prosciutto ham!! ♥

Since we’re at the topic of food, this was what I had for breakfast at the hotel. Those green leafy things: songino (lamb lettuce). They are so good. Sweet, without a hint of bitterness, with a very nice texture. It’s so much better than eating rockets or baby spinach. Songino’s good. ♥

Enough of food for now. Let’s head over to meet an old friend of mine, shall we?

Hello!

Well, that was indeed a rather odd giant poodle, but he’s not whom I want you to meet.

There. Say “Hi” people. Meet Leonardo, the polymath, the Renaissance man, my boyfriend.

Leonardo da Vinci.

I think the highest compliment I could ever give a guy is this: “Baby, you’re my Leonardo da Vinci”.

*smacks self and wakes up*

Right. So where were we again before I slipped into my fantasies?

Oh, yes. Leonardo da Vinci.

He spent his early years in Milan, working for the Duke of Milan. He wanted a job so badly back then that he wrote a letter to the Duke saying that he could build the most advanced war machines, construct the strongest buildings and God knows what else. And if the Duke didn’t want any of that from him, he could still paint for the Duke.

So, paint he did, for the Duke of Milan, a mural of the Last Supper.

This picture you see here, is definitely not the real thing. The real painting is probably 10 times bigger than this. I couldn’t take a picture of that to show you because we were only allowed a mere 15 minutes in the room and strictly no photography allowed. So, what I did was, I just sat down in one of the few benches and gape in awe, taking in all the minute details of the painting: the sandals they wore, the food on the table, the light and the shadows…they were served eels, which I was told, was the Duke’s favourite dish.

Throughout the years, the painting went through many ordeals as it almost got destroyed by air raids, had parts of it knocked out to form an archway, had too many restoration that eventually ruined the painting until a team of experts were commissioned to restore the painting to its original condition.

I was glad. I was so glad that I had the chance to be able to see this painting in all its glory that tears began to weld in my eyes. For the whole 15 minutes, it was just me and the Last Supper, until my train of thoughts were broken by a chime indicating that it was time for us to leave the room.

Then, we all walked back to where we came from and headed to where the Duke used to live.

Swanky, eh? I love the fountain.

But here’s something swankier – the Teatro la Scala, a world renowned opera house in Milan!

The view of the interior from one of the balconies

This is where the rich and wealthy mingle and gamble and watch some opera during their free time!

Poster for Otello

Now, isn’t it a time to rest our little feet and maybe for some dessert as well?

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

When in Milan, have a serving of Tiramisu!

After filling our tummies up, it’s time to head home via the subway again. Oh, and maybe to stock up on some groceries as well, along the way. ♥

horn OK please

horn OK please

-Horn OK Please!!-

Don’t play play with Indian drivers.

(Like, seriously, wikipedia has an article dedicated to this whole “Horn OK Please” thing.)

If you wanna experience the ride of your life, simply hop onto one of the many auto-rickshaws (a.k.a auto) easily found all across India.

I had my thrills on one of those little machines in Mumbai.

It lasted for almost an hour as our destination was quite a distance away.

The first ten minutes of the ride?

It was exhilarating, the way the little machine speeds haphazardly as though they were going through a Brownian motion on the congested streets on Mumbai.

After the ten minutes on the auto?

You’re wishing that you’d reach soon, you’re begging it to stop, you can’t wait to kiss the ground because it was such a bumpy ride, you’d probably can’t feel the existence of your butt anymore.

Upon reaching our destination, we scrambled out onto the streets and stepped into Daksha’s beauty parlour.

My little friends getting their eyebrows threaded too

Eyebrow threading for only…. $0.60?!

What’s not to love? I’m loving Mumbai already!!!

And look what I’d found! My all time favourite Indian snack- Pani Poori!

It’s all over Mumbai!

Seeing this makes me reminisce all the nonsense that me and my Indian colleagues were up to back when we were still in training.

Omg. The stupid role play can still make me laugh so hard. (inside joke :p)

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Now, what’s travelling without some shopping!

Here’s what I’ve gotten! Really, really cheaply priced everything! My belt was only Rs. 50 ($1.46)!! Meg Cabot chick lit Rs. 199!!

Oh, look!! They even have pani puri flavoured Nissin cup noodles! :D

I didn’t really shop a lot this time around because, I don’t know, I was trying to be wary of my spending??

But I seriously wish I’d shopped more!!

I could’ve gotten more of these bangles and the super colorful Punjabi suits from Linking Road!

I love them so, so much because they are so vibrant in color!

And then, I found the best hair shampoo, ever! ♥

Mumbai is love. :)

Two years and a cheese bowl

Two years and a cheese bowl

And so, it’s been awhile since the story began.

2009 V-day card from Mr DW

The story which began when a cool dude walked into Starbucks (aka Mr dw) and met a Signature Hot CIO-colate (aka Ms dw).

Sydney's Panoramic Skyline

A little over two years later, on a bright and cheerful morning, they found themselves in the metropolitan city of Sydney…

Captain Cook?

…waiting to embark on Captain Cook’s lunch cruise.

They started their cruise with a toast of sparkling rosé to commemorate two years of tolerating with each others’ nonsense.

Cheers for more nonsense to come as they both love them so, so much.

The weather was sunny and bright, it was definitely a perfect day to be out on a cruise.

Except for the little fact that Ms dw’s freckles thought it would be lovely to pop out for some sunshine. She’d certainly need to slap on some SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen for her next outing to keep the freckles at bay.

The façade of the Sydney Opera House

Ah~ Clear blue skies and white fluffy clouds. What more could a girl ask for?

Well, maybe one of these seaside villas with a private swimming pool and a yacht, yes, Mr dw?

Mr and Ms dw had a simple two course meal. An hors d’œuvre of smoked salmon with caviar was shared amongst them, whereas for entrée Mr dw had herb 包 鸡 and Ms dw had a beef steak. After that, a lovely platter of aged cheddar and fruit platter to wrap things up before heading up to the observation deck. :D

It was so windy and chilly up there that Ms dw’s teeth were chattering. But to Mr dw, the chill that she felt was nothing more than a fly’s wing gliding down the skin of his cheek. Mr dw attempted to offer her his warmth with a hug but the chill was too much for her to bear, so Ms dw decided to don on her Antartica expedition gear to brace the chilly winds of the great…uhm…Parramatta River.

Soon before long, it was time to disembark. But little did Ms dw know, as soon as they disembark, another journey awaits. Mr dw insisted that they search for the best macarons in the whole of Australia.

So, off they went; far, far away from Circular Quay to Darling St of Balmain to look for a shop named adriano zumbo…in a cab. By then, Ms dw was so exhausted from the long flight she took the night before that she fell asleep the instant she got on the cab. When she woke up again, she found herself standing alongside Mr dw in a very long queue.  Everyone was waiting…patiently waiting in line for their turns to get their hands on the famed macarons.

Twenty five minutes. That was how long Mr and Ms dw stood in line for their macarons. The macarons were in the colors of a traffic light with very unique combination of flavors. Ms dw first sank her teeth into the green one – fennel, pistachio and pear. The flavors were complex, yet pleasant to the taste buds with subtle sweetness emitted from the puréed pears and hints of fennel to give it a slight savory edge. Adriano zumbo offers a variety of unique and exciting pastries and pies. Their offerings are as exciting as a savory and herb-y yet lemony meringue pie. Despite the exciting flavors, Mr dw was very happy person because he loves desserts, a lot.

So since, it was just a little over two years since the story began, Mr dw decided to get Ms dw a gift. When it comes to gifts, Mr dw is a very practical person.

Mr dw  has gotten Ms dw a cheese tray with glass dome. He has never given her any teddies to cuddle, so Ms dw would be cuddling her cheese dome to bed tonight.

Ms dw’s ten year anniversary gift will definitely be a vacuum cleaner that could peel fruits.

Sleep tight, and sweet dreams.

I woke up this morning, missing Beijing very much. Specifically, the five-star hotel’s bathroom that I’d showered in.

Ah, I have a need to be pampered today. Life’s been slightly draggy for the past week.

Imagine an awesome full body massage by the day bed.

And after that, a hearty meal of hot and spicy dishes while sipping sour plum juice,

in a restaurant along the busy streets of Beijing.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Well, maybe have a pignut or two as well.

As long as you don’t let your feelings be cheated by Starbucks like me.

What a victim of preconceived notions I am.

I’m a Starbucks Card collector. A Starbucks Card is something like a prepaid card which you can use to purchase drinks and merchandise from any participating Starbucks outlets in the world.

As for the one that I’d gotten in Beijing, it’s just a discount card (10% off only, hor!) that has no cash value or whatsoever, and it is only valid till November 8, 2010. A discount card that has ripped RMB 80 off of me. I feel so emotionally cheated. RMB 80 may not sound a lot to some.

But just look at what kind of nonsense I can get with RMB20.

Or rather, what’s left of my nonsense junk food haul of the day: matcha flavoured pocky, ice cream matcha oreo biscuits, Lay’s crisps in flavours like hot & sour fish soup, lemon tea and cucumber (specially recommened by a colleague).

Here’s some half naked adults and naked children running and peeing all over the place in the fountain area outside one of the very few Apple stores in Asia.

This is Beijing. This is China.

Can’t wait till the day that I get the chance to head over to Beijing again.

Hopefully by then, the mall next to my hotel will be fully opened.
